March 24 Quarries Meeting
Dear Neighbor,
As you may recall, BWC was recently contacted by LCRA concerning their plans to clear out the area under the high power lines in the easement that runs from Alhambra to BW Drive between Cordova and BW Drive. While the LCRA has a right to maintain this easement as it deems fit, they have agreed to meet with concerned BWC members to discuss their plans. The BWC Board of Directors has set up a meeting with LCRA and our neighborhood. The meeting will be held at the Davis Elementary Cafeteria Wednesday, Feb 26th from 6:30-8:00 p.m. Davis Elementary is located at 5514 Duval Road.
Regards,
Kelly Folts
President - Balcones Woods Board of Directors
· The agenda included a review of the BWC financial results and the accomplishments of the Operating Committee (including discussions on the re-plumbing of the baby pool, painting of the sport courts lights, sealing the commons area parking lot, and the passing of the City of Austin parking ordinance).
· All board and committee members were elected by a majority of the 83 ballots received.
· Both amendments to the by-laws were defeated as they failed to achieve a two-thirds majority vote.
A complete listing of Board members and Operating Committee members will appear in next month’s issue. In the meantime you can visit www.balconeswoods.org
Meetings
Volunteerism is the backbone that keeps our neighborhood vibrant and ensures our ongoing strength as one of the most desirable areas in Austin. We welcome volunteers to run for office as a committee head, operating committee officer or board member. Also, just as important, are neighbors volunteering to work with the various committees on the day-to-day activities which keep our association functional and provide the outstanding amenities enjoyed by all residents.
Your input and participation are always welcomed and appreciated.

If you baby sit for somebody, they give you a coupon.) If you are interested in being a part of this organization, come to our next meeting. Balcones Woods Meal Circle
Last September, the Balcones Woods Women’s Club introduced the idea of a neighborhood meal circle. The intent is to bring food to neighbors in need of a helping hand. Maybe a neighbor has fallen ill or someone on your street has just had a baby.
The Meal Circle is open to everyone!!! That includes EVERYONE who would like to cook--and we can always use new cooks. All we need is your e-mail address and you’ll get an e-mail telling you when and who needs help. For example, it could be once-a-week for someone who lives alone and just needs a little help and company. It can be for a week or two for an illness or a new baby—it’s up to you. If you’re interested in learning more, being on the Meal Circle e-mail list, or know of a family that could use this, visit the website or write us at mealcircle@balconeswoods.org Thanks!
Interested in a lifeguard class at the Balcones Woods Pool?
If we have enough participants, we will have a class at our pool either over one weekend or two. Please contact Cindy Gilmer if interested 346-7498 or 343-7999 (work).
Quarries Update
The Hyde Park Baptist Church-Five Neighborhoods Coordinating Committee met January 13, 2003. The next meeting will be March 24.
Construction Update: Construction of the Mopac to Quarries driveway and the infrastructure in the Quarries itself is substantially complete. As of today, most of the privacy fence along Balcones Woods Drive is up and the boulders blocking access at the dead-end of Balcones Woods Drive are in. Precluding additional bad weather, construction, except for 'Punch out' work, should have been completed.
The next construction will be of a storage building.
HPBC has not finalized plans or funding for the next construction phase, the Christian Life Center, and there is no projected start date for this or additional construction.
Use of Quarries: Reminder - the Quarries area is closed for use by unauthorized personnel during the construction. Fall league softball is scheduled to be played in the Quarries as well as normal Hyde Park school sports events. Information on these events can be found at www.hpbc.org/rec.
Other Issues:
The coordination committee is still working out a plan for coordination of large events in the Quarries. This effort will give the neighborhoods advance notice of large special events and a chance to voice concerns and work out potential conflicts. Also, points of contact for both the neighborhoods and HPBC will be named for issues arising during the events. This event planning will also include neighborhood access, via the Hyde Park web site, of all events in the Quarries area, including regularly scheduled activities.
An article in the newspaper mentioned a Hyde Park option to move the Church to their property in Northwest Austin. This area was not the Quarries area.
Easter Egg Hunt. HPBC may have an Easter egg hunt in the Quarries during April. Plans have not been finalized. If the event occurs, Church members and surrounding neighbors will be invited. Access for the event will be via the Mopac driveway only and the event will be handled as a 'Special event' and coordinated with the neighborhoods.
Information Sources: There are several good sources of information regarding the Quarries including the HPBC web site www.hpbc.org
and our own Balcones Woods site www.balconeswoods.org.
The Mesa Park site has an extensive collection of documents and will soon contain minutes of the coordination committee meetings www.main.org/mpna.
Contacts: Please use your neighborhood committee contacts for information about the Quarries or input regarding complaints. The Balcones Woods contact is listed below. If you believe your issues are not being addressed, please contact a Balcones Woods board member.

Camp at the Austin Children's Museum
Spring Break and Summer Camp registration for 2003 starts on February 17 for non-members!
Hello Camp Parents,
We've sure enjoyed having your kids in camp at the Austin Children's Museum in years past, and we'd love to see them again in 2003! The date to start registering is just around the corner, and camps do fill quickly, so now is the time to think about summer! Three quick things to share with you:
1. If your child is still between the ages of 7 and 11, please click on the link below to see the new topics! The price is the same as last year, and we still have professional classroom teachers and field trips every single day. The page also contains some pictures from years past - you may even see your child in one of them! New camps include International Chefs" and "Unexpected Art!"

2. If your child is now too old for camp, but is between the ages of 14 and 18, s/he is eligible to be a Junior Volunteer this summer or a Counselor in Training for camps! If you are interested in either of these volunteer opportunities, please email brilesr@austinkids.org.
3. If you have other children who are now between the ages of 4 and 6, we have camps for them as well! Please click below to see those options and more photos!
New camp topics include "Outer Space", "Insects, Spiders and Worms" and "Young Scientists Experiment!".
