It’s that time again…

the Fall Neighborhood Garage Sale

The Garage Sale is scheduled for Saturday, October 19.   For a donation of $5, we will

list your ad in the Austin Statesman, pass out customized maps at the front of the

neighborhood, and supply you with some “attention-getters” for your mailbox.

The donations go to the Balcones Woods Women’s Club, which also hosts free

neighborhood events like the annual Egg Hunt in the spring, the Fourth of July Parade,

and Santa in the Park in December.  Please contact Nikki for more information at

webmaster@balconeswoods.org or 502-8726.  Thanks!

Wanted: Vendors for November 21 BW Women's Club meeting

The Women's Club is hosting a "Balcones Woods Marketplace" at its November 21 meeting.  This is a terrific (and hopefully very profitable) opportunity to get your product line in front of the ladies of Balcones Woods...and just in time for holiday shopping!

We're interested in showcasing anything from custom-created items such as jewelry and home accessories to well-known product lines sold by independent distributors such as Discovery Toys, Pampered Chef, Tupperware, Homemade Gourmet, Southern Living at Home, Creative Memories, etc.

If you would like to be a part of this fun and festive event, please contact Lindy Buckley at lbuckley@austin.rr.com or 346-3329.  As we have limited space, vending slots will be awarded on a "first come, first served" basis, and preference will be given to neighborhood vendors.

Bridge Club

The BW Bridge Club is looking for new members to start our next season.  There are two

groups to choose from (or choose both!):

Bridge Club:  Third Monday at 7:00 p.m. (for individual players)

Partners Club:  Second Saturday at 7:30 p.m. (partners only)

Both groups are "just for fun" and welcome beginners as well as more experienced players.  For more information or to sign up, contact Sally Sassen (ssassen@austin.rr.com) or call 346-2140.

Thank You to Doug and Annette Bohne and Pok-E-Joe’s for their contributions of great food at both Adult Parties this year.

Safe Routes to School

Ask yourself these questions…

If you answered "no" to any of these questions you need to submit a Safe Routes to School (SRS) program application. There is $3,000,000 available for construction projects under the TxDOT Safe Routes to School program. This funding is designed to help you fix the major safety problems with your children's school routes. But you must hurry-- TxDOT is on a very fast time line for this first call for projects.

The >Austin Neighborhoods Council has competed several workshops on the >application process for SRS.  >Full information on the SRS program is available >on the web at www.saferoutestexas.org.

No Parking!

On a vote of 5-2 (members Alvarez and Slusher), the Austin City Council approved the ordinance which bans parking on lawns. This ordinance went into effect on September 9.  This ordinance will be applicable only in the neighborhoods who have petitioned to be included. Balcones Woods and Mesa Park are both included in the ordinance.

APD will enforce this ordinance and is still working through its procedure. From previous meetings, APD is not going to go looking for vehicles parked on lawns but will rely on complaints to APD (recommend dialing 311 to report this), which in all likelihood will be addressed by the District Representative.

Neighborhoods must ‘re-apply’ during the first quarter of next year.  BWC will have this item on the annual agenda.

Quarries Update

The Hyde Park Baptist Church-Five Neighborhoods Coordinating Committee met August 26.  Here are some highlights of the meeting.  The next meeting will be October 28.

Construction Update:  Construction of the Mopac to Quarries driveway and the infrastructure in the Quarries itself is running ahead of schedule.  The heavy construction work should be complete by the end of October.  A water cutoff within the Quarries has been installed which will eliminate adverse effects on surrounding neighbors in the case of water supply problems within the Quarries.  Issues regarding mosquito control have been addressed and steps recommended by the City of Austin are being implemented within the Quarries.

Other issues, primarily dealing with traffic in Mesa Park, have been addressed satisfactorily.  Representatives of HPBC are continuing to be responsive to the neighborhoods, and cooperation remains good.

Use of Quarries:   Reminder - the Quarries area is closed for use by unauthorized personnel during the construction.  Fall league softball is scheduled to be played in the Quarries as well as normal Hyde Park school sports events.  Information on these events can be found at www.hpbc.org/rec/.

Other Issues:   The coordination committee is still working out a plan for coordination of large events in the Quarries.  This effort will give the neighborhoods advance notice of meetings and a chance to voice concerns and work out potential conflicts.  Also, points of contact for both the neighborhoods and HPBC will be named for issues arising during the events.

Information Sources:  There are several good sources of information regarding the Quarries including the HPBC web site and our own Balcones Woods site.  The Mesa Park site has an extensive collection of documents and will soon contain minutes of the coordination committee meetings.  www.main.org/mpna

Contacts:  Please contact Tom Terry, your neighborhood committee contact, for information about the Quarries or input regarding complaints.  If you believe your issues are not being addressed, please contact a Balcones Woods board member.
